Shari Tucker Photography sees Will & Kate in PEI

Will and Kate (and Shari) visit PEI

I have to admit, I’m not really a fan of royalty in general. I don’t watch the news, I don’t follow politics and I must be one of the few who did not see the broadcast of the Royal Wedding. What’s a photographer to do when she’s in the same city as Royalty though? Of course, I had to go try to take a few pictures!

I rolled out of my hotel bed on my first day of vacation at 7:15am. Drowsy, groggy and maybe even a little cranky as I was getting out of a super comfy bed to head to downtown Charlottetown to stand with thousands of people in questionable weather. I knew that the official welcoming ceremony was at around 10am, so I figured if I was there by 8am I’d be able to get a decent vantage point. Little did I realize that cabs would be 1/2 an hour backed up and that hundreds of people were actually really excited and lining up much earlier than I had even considered reasonable.

Eight Lessons Learned

I have been in business for eight great years. I have made many mistakes, most of which I have learned from. I have taken some great advice from other business owners and I have ignored advice from others, some of which I probably should have taken. I have learned a lot in the past eight years and here are eight lessons that I feel are worth learning for anyone.

1. Work is not all there is to life.
2. Health is your most valuable asset
3. Cheapest isn’t best.
4. Back ups are worth the money.
5. Free doesn’t mean you have to take it.
6. Saying no is powerful.
7. Giving back is better than receiving.
8. Love what you do so that you don’t hate half of your life.

The photo to the left is of me at a corporate photography shoot for NSLC and the Adopt a Stream program. Don’t I look like I love what I do?

Fairytale Wedding

This past weekend I was overwhelmed with love, emotion and pure joy for Sarah and Stephen as they tied the knot. They are clearly head over heels for each other and it was apparent every second of their wedding day.

I’m really good friends with the groom’s sister, Stephanie. I met her back when I was in school and did maternity photos for her with her first child. We became fast friends and I have done photos of her kids regularly over the past several years. Beyond that, we’ve traveled to Costa Rica together! Pretty cool client-turned-friend story.

The Gaetz family has always welcomed me and treated me just as if I were family and really, I feel like I am! Although I had met Stephen a few times, the first time I met Sarah was at one of the kid’s birthday parties being held out at Hatfield Farms. I wasn’t photographing it … I was attending, just like the rest of the family! I remember how sweet Sarah was and how much I enjoyed sitting and talking to her about music. I’m positive she also told me bits and pieces about how the two of them met as well.

A couple of years later, it was at Stephanie’s birthday party that I found out Stephen and Sarah had gotten engaged. There was no question that they were perfect for each other and I was thrilled that they asked me to take their wedding photos.

Free isn’t always beneficial.

A few months ago I did some fun photos of my friend Dual N Jenn in her Roller Derby get up. She didn’t ask me to, I just offered, thought it would be fun. We had a great couple of hours laughing as she tried to hold still poses on wheels and we got some fantastic shots. Some of the photos featured a bright green mouth guard that Summit Dentistry had designed for her.

Earlier today I received a phone call from Summit Dentistry. The Doctor started by telling me the Jenn had given him permission to use the photos in his advertising and that he wanted permission to change/crop it. He also wanted my logo to put on it.

I was a little taken back because 1. Jenn can’t actually give him permission to use my photos which I’m sure neither of them really understood at the time, but I have now explained and 2. although he was asking for permission to make changes to it, he was assuming that he already had permission to use the photo.

I very much appreciate that he was willing to put my logo on the image, but what I want to explain to everyone is this …

Free isn’t always beneficial.

Young & Fearless - Inspiration of Cancer Survivors

June 1 2011

Tootin’ my own horn

I don’t really know the exact day that I officially decided I was in business for myself, but it was sometime in early 2003. Since I don’t know for sure, I’ve always just based it on my very first wedding clients who were Kelly and Marc Quenneville. They celebrated their eight year anniversary on May 31st, 2011, and therefore, so did I.

I sure have come a long way in eight years of business and I decided that today would be an alright day to toot my own horn. So, to celebrate, I’m going to reflect on eight accomplishments that I have had in the past eight years of my photography business.

1. Successfully moved my business from Truro to Halifax and have grown by leaps and bounds

2. Photographed interesting celebrities such as: Paula Abdul, Kevin O’Leary, Scott Speedman, David Foster, Matt Mays, Jimmy Rankin, Jully Black

3. Prepared three successful Young & Fearless art shows — hosted at Queen Street Studios, Art & Jules and The Marigold Cultural Centre

4. June 2010 Young & Fearless — Inspiration of Cancer Survivors book launch and officially published. The book is a compilation of beautiful photographs and poignant stories of 30 cancer survivors who are all 30 years and younger. It is available at Chapter’s in Atlantic Canada and Quebec, as well as online. It can also be found at many local bookstores. **Photo to the left shows all 30 survivors — the table of contents for the book.

Plane crash Fredericton New Brunswick

June 1 2011

Travel Epiphany

As a child I had my fair share of family vacations and travel experiences with my parents. We went to Disney four times — two by van and two by plane, the white mountains in New Hampshire, Niagra Falls, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, but never anywhere out of North America. Coming from the small town of Florenceville, NB, the travels were still pretty interesting for a kid.

I graduated from high school in 1996 and didn’t stray far from home, choosing to study at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, NB. After one year, I had discovered that University education wasn’t for me and I promptly decided to follow ‘a boy’ out west where I attended Grande Prairie Regional College.

Several of my life’s defining moments have been realized through travel related epiphanies, starting with the adventures of Grande Prairie. There’s no better way to grow up fast than to live on your own thousands of miles away from your parents!

In December 1997, I was returning home to New Brunswick to spend Christmas with family. Much to my dismay, I was a passenger in a plane crash near the airport in Fredericton, NB on December 16th. At 19 years old, having survived a plane crash, life began to look a little different for me.

Donna’s Boudoir Experience

Name: Donna Konowalchuk
Age: 39 — Soon to be the dreaded 4–0
What do you do for a living? News Editor
Do you have kids? Two

How would you describe yourself? Kind of shy, but can be a b-tch when I need to be.
How would you describe your body type? Could stand to lose those last ten pounds that all women think they need to lose.
What is your favorite feature about yourself? Definitely my boobs (when they’re in a pretty bra, not necessarily “au natural”).

What color is your favorite underwear? Don’t have a favorite pair, all my underwear is sexy, and comes in many colors.
How high are your highest heels? My gold ones that I wore for my boudoir photos, not sure exactly how high they are. High enough to feel sexy in.
Have you ever worn heels to bed? Nope, hubby would say that I was poking him with them.

What made you decide to do a boudoir photo shoot? I was asked to attend for the breakfast television feature, and would never turn down something girlie like that. Plus, it was a day away from kids!
What was the most interesting thing you took to the shoot? My sky high gold heels that I have never had the chance to wear before.
