Young & Fearless: Journeys for a Lifetime

October 12 2011

Press Release — Young & Fearless Journeys for a Lifetime

Halifax—Local photographer Shari Tucker will be opening a new art exhibit as part of this year’s Photopolis festival on Saturday October 15. Young & Fearless: Journeys for a Lifetime celebrates the work of Coalition for Kids International through photography. The opening event features remarks by Shari Tucker as well as travel talks on Poland and Germany, and a upcoming group photo-adventure travel trip called Peru: Through the Lens.

In March 2011 Shari Tucker captured the journey of five Canadian teens travelling to Poland on a 12-day journey to grant wishes to terminally ill children with The Coalition for Kids International. Immersed in the culture and history of Germany and Poland, these teenagers gained a new respect for life, a new outlook on their own situations and learned to care, share and transform.

The teens I travelled to Poland with came back different people,” says Tucker. “When you travel half way around the world to visit a dying child whose only wish is to have a laptop, camera or video games, you can’t help but come back changed. The Canadian teenagers realize pretty quickly how lucky they are when something that is considered a birthday present here is a dying wish in Poland.”

Shari Tucker is widely known as the photographer behind Young & Fearless: Inspirations of Cancer Survivors, which included three art exhibits in Nova Scotia and the publication of her first book. Her work has also been included in several national exhibitions with Photosensitive, including 10 pieces in Cancer Connections, one in TIEd Together and one in The Energy Project. All voluntary projects working to ‘harness the power of the camera to achieve social justice’.

Photosensitive — Photos for Social Change

Back in 2007 I was contacted by Photosensitive to participate in a photographic project called Cancer Connections. Photosensitive is an organized group of photographers who come together to capture powerful images to get people talking and create social change. It sounded like an interesting organization, so I agreed to help out.

Over the next two years while Cancer Connections was established as a national traveling exhibit, 10 of my images were displayed in exhibits all across Canada. This included an exhibit right here in Halifax, as well as the closing exhibit in Ottawa in Spring of 2010. The Cancer Connections coffee table book was launched in conjunction with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil month, in April 2011. The book holds 1000 images with personal stories and quotes of strength, courage and determination.

Tootin’ my own horn

I don’t really know the exact day that I officially decided I was in business for myself, but it was sometime in early 2003. Since I don’t know for sure, I’ve always just based it on my very first wedding clients who were Kelly and Marc Quenneville. They celebrated their eight year anniversary on May 31st, 2011, and therefore, so did I.

I sure have come a long way in eight years of business and I decided that today would be an alright day to toot my own horn. So, to celebrate, I’m going to reflect on eight accomplishments that I have had in the past eight years of my photography business.

1. Successfully moved my business from Truro to Halifax and have grown by leaps and bounds

2. Photographed interesting celebrities such as: Paula Abdul, Kevin O’Leary, Scott Speedman, David Foster, Matt Mays, Jimmy Rankin, Jully Black

3. Prepared three successful Young & Fearless art shows — hosted at Queen Street Studios, Art & Jules and The Marigold Cultural Centre

4. June 2010 Young & Fearless — Inspiration of Cancer Survivors book launch and officially published. The book is a compilation of beautiful photographs and poignant stories of 30 cancer survivors who are all 30 years and younger. It is available at Chapter’s in Atlantic Canada and Quebec, as well as online. It can also be found at many local bookstores. **Photo to the left shows all 30 survivors — the table of contents for the book.

Chelsea’s First Day

I’m very excited to have Chelsea Quinlan hired on as my part time office assistant. She started with me on Thursday, May 12th and we had a very productive and exciting day.

First was orientation to my home office, then special introductions to my kitty, Morgan. After that we got to work. She helped me finish up a job for Manulife Financial, added links to some great companies on my website in the Connections section and then started editing a job for NSLC.

That afternoon we headed out to Brigadoon Children’s Camp in Aylesford. If you don’t know about Brigadoon, you should definitely look it up. The story is very inspiring and the facility, although under construction, is well underway. We carpooled with Jenn Ross who is Brigadoon staff and then took a tour of the site.

We had to put on all of our safety gear, so here’s a photo of Chelsea rockin’ the hard hat! In the background you can see one of the five ‘cabins’ that are being built for campers, although I’d call them more of a lodge.

Looking for more information and photos about Brigadoon Children’s Camp and Shari Tucker Photography’s involvement? Watch for blog posts and galleries in the portfolio section as they unfold!

Bianca’s First Day(s)

I’m thrilled to have added Bianca Muller as part of the Shari Tucker Photography team. She brings along a background in photography from NSCAD and an eagerness to learn lots of new things!

Bianca’s first couple of days started out shadowing and second shooting with me for a Techsploration conference held at Saint Mary’s University. She did a great job the first evening capturing lots of candids and freshening up her flash skills. By day two we had her going full steam ahead taking lots of photos of the young girls participating in this really great conference about non-traditional career choices.

Bianca and I will be off to Techsploration in Truro this upcoming week for the last of the 2011 conferences.

If you are a woman in a non-traditional career (trades, technology or science) and would like to offer up your expertise and motivation to aspiring young women, please get in touch with the Techsploration Staff. They are always in need of volunteers and role models for various duties. I’ve been involved as a photographer for over five years, but have also been a keynote speaker at the Port Hawkesbury conference. Get involved!

Girls making non-traditional career choices

Back when I was taking photography at NSCC, I was the type of student who took on every opportunity I could, paid or un-paid in order to get experience in the photography world and strengthen my skills.

In 2005 (I think), I was contacted by Techsploration. They were looking for a student photographer for one of their events that was being held in Truro, which is where I lived at the time.

Techsploration is a not for profit organization with the goal of introducing young girls to non-traditional career choices. They have wonderful female role models from all kinds of trades and technology jobs that show the girls what their job is like, talk to them about the skills and courses needed to pursue the career, but most of all, encourage them to keep their minds open because they can be whatever they want to be!
