Space to grow an Exceptional business

Have you had the pleasure of meeting Rachel Sumner? She’s a lovely lady with an endearing British accent who seems to have met everyone in Halifax in just the past few months. Rachel is the Chief Operating Officer, and one of the founders of the mighty duo behind platform. Haven’t heard about platform? Well, let me fill you in on my explosion of excitement!

If the tag line of ‘Space to grow an exceptional business’ isn’t enough to intrigue you, let me tell you why I am incredibly excited to be a founding member of this new venture!

platform is a community-focused, shared workspace. It has high end design, a clean and professional look and feel (or will have, when the dust settles from it being a work in progress at the moment!) It is a transitional space for businesses who want to grow and be part of a community, but haven’t yet quite reached the point where their own office is justifiable. It is in the midst of construction at the moment as part of Southgate at the top of the new Larry Utec Interchange.

Although I will not be there every day, I have the freedom to come and go as I please and use the space on an as-needed basis. I get the luxury of a beautiful shared office space with minimal overhead cost AND I still get to own a home-based business, but one that has room to grow! Oh and it has parking! I avoid our downtown core whenever I can because of the time it takes to get through traffic, the annoyance of finding a parking spot and then the expense of paying for that spot (or the ensuing ticket when you can’t find enough change for the meter!). platform is in Bedford, five minutes in the opposite direction of rush hour traffic and it has parking. It is stress relief all ready!

Free isn’t always beneficial.

A few months ago I did some fun photos of my friend Dual N Jenn in her Roller Derby get up. She didn’t ask me to, I just offered, thought it would be fun. We had a great couple of hours laughing as she tried to hold still poses on wheels and we got some fantastic shots. Some of the photos featured a bright green mouth guard that Summit Dentistry had designed for her.

Earlier today I received a phone call from Summit Dentistry. The Doctor started by telling me the Jenn had given him permission to use the photos in his advertising and that he wanted permission to change/crop it. He also wanted my logo to put on it.

I was a little taken back because 1. Jenn can’t actually give him permission to use my photos which I’m sure neither of them really understood at the time, but I have now explained and 2. although he was asking for permission to make changes to it, he was assuming that he already had permission to use the photo.

I very much appreciate that he was willing to put my logo on the image, but what I want to explain to everyone is this …

Free isn’t always beneficial.

Safety First! Check out my cool Harness!

I do a lot of work for Emera, Nova Scotia Power and Black & McDonald here in Halifax. I’m always amazed and inspired by their corporate safety philosophies. In fact, I’ve even adopted one of their practices which is to back into parking spots. It is safer to drive out forward than backing out blindly and such an easy thing to change. I’ve been practicing with my new Hyundai Sante Fe every chance I get.

All of these companies have very high safety standards. They always ensure that I am well equipped and safe any time that I am on a job sites. I even have my own green Black & McDonald hard hat and safety glasses!
