Stocking Stuffer Ideas for the Traveller

Thursday evening as I was standing at home depot, looking for options to organize my winter coats behind my main door, I got the phone call that I’ve been waiting for … Our last required person for Peru Through the Lens had booked! Yes, I did a little happy dance.

The Adventure Travel Company and I have been promoting this trip since summer and it was down to the final deadline to see if the trip was going to happen as we had to have a minimum of eight people to run it. 9 people, including myself, will be off to see the beautiful land of Peru from Feb 18 — Mar 1, 2012 and I can’t believe that’s only two months from now!

Now that it is confirmed, my heart is pounding, my head is racing! So much to do, to organize, to research before I go!

I’m going to make an effort to blog about my preparations and my trip … starting now.

First up, since Christmas is only a week away, I’ve asked my family to fill my stocking with the following travel ‘stuff’. If you, or someone you know is traveling soon, maybe you should consider some of these as well!

pepto bismal tablets (not liquid)
tylenol or aleve
band aids
sun screen — spf 45–60
gravol
money belt
one of those waterproof things you put around your neck to keep your stuff safe while swimming
a nice hard cover journal (lots of nice ones at Chapters)
blister protector things that are like band aids
travel packages of kleenex
travel packs of wet wipes
collapseable water bottle — at Chapters — When full it is a water bottle, but after you drink it, it collapses and is MUCH easier/lighter to carry.
water purifying tablets

Young & Fearless: Journeys for a Lifetime

October 12 2011

Press Release — Young & Fearless Journeys for a Lifetime

Halifax—Local photographer Shari Tucker will be opening a new art exhibit as part of this year’s Photopolis festival on Saturday October 15. Young & Fearless: Journeys for a Lifetime celebrates the work of Coalition for Kids International through photography. The opening event features remarks by Shari Tucker as well as travel talks on Poland and Germany, and a upcoming group photo-adventure travel trip called Peru: Through the Lens.

In March 2011 Shari Tucker captured the journey of five Canadian teens travelling to Poland on a 12-day journey to grant wishes to terminally ill children with The Coalition for Kids International. Immersed in the culture and history of Germany and Poland, these teenagers gained a new respect for life, a new outlook on their own situations and learned to care, share and transform.

The teens I travelled to Poland with came back different people,” says Tucker. “When you travel half way around the world to visit a dying child whose only wish is to have a laptop, camera or video games, you can’t help but come back changed. The Canadian teenagers realize pretty quickly how lucky they are when something that is considered a birthday present here is a dying wish in Poland.”

Shari Tucker is widely known as the photographer behind Young & Fearless: Inspirations of Cancer Survivors, which included three art exhibits in Nova Scotia and the publication of her first book. Her work has also been included in several national exhibitions with Photosensitive, including 10 pieces in Cancer Connections, one in TIEd Together and one in The Energy Project. All voluntary projects working to ‘harness the power of the camera to achieve social justice’.

Shari Tucker Photography sees Will & Kate in PEI

July 4 2011

Will and Kate (and Shari) visit PEI

I have to admit, I’m not really a fan of royalty in general. I don’t watch the news, I don’t follow politics and I must be one of the few who did not see the broadcast of the Royal Wedding. What’s a photographer to do when she’s in the same city as Royalty though? Of course, I had to go try to take a few pictures!

I rolled out of my hotel bed on my first day of vacation at 7:15am. Drowsy, groggy and maybe even a little cranky as I was getting out of a super comfy bed to head to downtown Charlottetown to stand with thousands of people in questionable weather. I knew that the official welcoming ceremony was at around 10am, so I figured if I was there by 8am I’d be able to get a decent vantage point. Little did I realize that cabs would be 1/2 an hour backed up and that hundreds of people were actually really excited and lining up much earlier than I had even considered reasonable.

Young & Fearless - Inspiration of Cancer Survivors

Tootin’ my own horn

I don’t really know the exact day that I officially decided I was in business for myself, but it was sometime in early 2003. Since I don’t know for sure, I’ve always just based it on my very first wedding clients who were Kelly and Marc Quenneville. They celebrated their eight year anniversary on May 31st, 2011, and therefore, so did I.

I sure have come a long way in eight years of business and I decided that today would be an alright day to toot my own horn. So, to celebrate, I’m going to reflect on eight accomplishments that I have had in the past eight years of my photography business.

1. Successfully moved my business from Truro to Halifax and have grown by leaps and bounds

2. Photographed interesting celebrities such as: Paula Abdul, Kevin O’Leary, Scott Speedman, David Foster, Matt Mays, Jimmy Rankin, Jully Black

3. Prepared three successful Young & Fearless art shows — hosted at Queen Street Studios, Art & Jules and The Marigold Cultural Centre

4. June 2010 Young & Fearless — Inspiration of Cancer Survivors book launch and officially published. The book is a compilation of beautiful photographs and poignant stories of 30 cancer survivors who are all 30 years and younger. It is available at Chapter’s in Atlantic Canada and Quebec, as well as online. It can also be found at many local bookstores. **Photo to the left shows all 30 survivors — the table of contents for the book.

Plane crash Fredericton New Brunswick

June 1 2011

Travel Epiphany

As a child I had my fair share of family vacations and travel experiences with my parents. We went to Disney four times — two by van and two by plane, the white mountains in New Hampshire, Niagra Falls, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, but never anywhere out of North America. Coming from the small town of Florenceville, NB, the travels were still pretty interesting for a kid.

I graduated from high school in 1996 and didn’t stray far from home, choosing to study at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, NB. After one year, I had discovered that University education wasn’t for me and I promptly decided to follow ‘a boy’ out west where I attended Grande Prairie Regional College.

Several of my life’s defining moments have been realized through travel related epiphanies, starting with the adventures of Grande Prairie. There’s no better way to grow up fast than to live on your own thousands of miles away from your parents!

In December 1997, I was returning home to New Brunswick to spend Christmas with family. Much to my dismay, I was a passenger in a plane crash near the airport in Fredericton, NB on December 16th. At 19 years old, having survived a plane crash, life began to look a little different for me.

Peru — Through your Lens

Are you an Amateur Photographer or Photo Enthusiast?
Woud you like to explore Peru?
Are you interested in people and giving back?
If you are looking for an adventure and have a passion for photography, this is the trip of a lifetime for you!

Shari Tucker Photography — Your Story. Captured has partnered with The Adventure Travel Company right here in Halifax, NS to bring you an amazing opportunity to explore Peru’s people and landscape — through your lens.

This trip is for anyone with a passion for photography and adventure! The trip will be in a small group (10–15) with pre-arranged transportation, but with photographers in mind. Itineraries will be arranged, but yet flexible with very few specific ‘reservations’ that have to be met. Yes, that’s right, a trip that caters to you! If that means having a chartered bus for our group at 5am so that we can be set up for sunrise, that’s what we will do.

All of this, AND the expertise of a well established professional photographer at your disposal for the whole trip. Tips, tricks, shop talk and lots of opportunities to be fully immersed in your passion. Although at this time, no specific workshops or formal training are planned, Shari is open to answering questions and talking about photography openly with anyone on the trip.

Please join the facebook event to keep up with details as they are released.
